FamilySearch Lessons at HCPD

These lessons will be “Hands On” with first a little lecture, then actually applying what is learned.  You can sign up for any or all of the classes according to your needs and desires.

Lesson 1 is a lesson for beginners on Tuesday, April 14th, at 6:30. – GETTING STARTED WITH FAMILYSEARCH

Those attending will establish a FamilySearch Account and develop a family tree.  Members attending should bring a laptop or other device.  You will need to bring names, and dates and places of birth for yourself, your parents, and your grandparents.  If you are young, you may want to also include your great-grandparents.  Your tree should expand after inserting this information.  Information on living persons will only be visible to yourself.  You will learn how to view your tree in different modes, be able to see the trees of your ancestors, and see the different things you can print from your tree.  This lesson will be taught by Carol White, assisted by others.

Lesson 2 will be held on Tuesday, April 21st, at 6:30 – NAVIGATING YOUR FAMILY TREE

Explore your FamilySearch family tree as you examine details, sources, memories, timelines, viewing your relationship to a person on your tree, and finding information about that person.  You will learn how to collaborate with others who have your family members in their trees, as well as various ways to view your tree.  This lesson will be taught by Mary Glass, assisted by others.

Lesson 3 will be held on Tuesday, April 28th, at 6:30 – RESEARCH

You will learn research techniques using FamilySearch and then apply them during the workshop.  These include finding a person in the global family tree, searching records found on the site, searching books with a keyword, searching cemeteries, and how to use the WIKI.  This will be taught by Mary Glass

Lesson 4 will be held on Tuesday, May 5th, at 6:30 – ADVANCED SEARCHING TECHNIQUES

Try out the amazing Full Text option on FamilySearch which will enable you to search information on a person, no matter where that person’s name appears on a document. You will see how Simple Search uses a more intuitive way of using full text search.  This is found at familysearchlabs.org.  Learn how to find microfilmed original documents using the FamilySearch catalog by searching title, place, or catalog number or by using sources found with other family members.  These records have not yet been indexed, but can be viewed online as a virtual microfilm.  Learn how to use artificial intelligence to find microfilm numbers and to transcribe and/or translate the documents.  This will be taught by Kaitlyn Pauley, a certified genealogist, assisted by Mary Glass.

Lesson 5 will be held on Tuesday, May 12th at 6:30 – ADDING NAMES, INFORMATION, AND SOURCES TO FAMILYSEARCH

Learn how to add memories, sources, and details, do a FamilyHistory search and an  Ancestry search (which will show what is available on Ancestry, but will not show the actual document).  Learn about print options, how to deal with duplicates, and how to make corrections to information.  As a bonus, learn how to enhance photographs.  You will be putting these things into practice. Carol White and Mary Glass will co-teach this class.

Lesson 6 will be held on Tuesday, May 19th at 6:30 – The FamilySearch Phone App and Resources Available at Local FamilySearch Libraries.

Learn about resources that are available for use on the computers in local FamilySearch libraries that cannot be accessed elsewhere without a paid subscription.  These include Ancestry,  My Heritage, Fold3, the Newspaper Archive, as well as many others. If you bring a cell phone you will be able to download the FamilySearch app and see the many features available on the lab.  This includes finding the relatives around you at the workshop.  Kaitlyn Pauley and Carol White will be co-teaching this class.
