The cemetery is near Conty Route 1 at Butchersville, Lewis County, WV, near the mouth of the Gee Lick Road (County Route 1/7).

Martin Hyre GraveLewisInformation has been supplied by Mr. Creed H. McCue of Vandalia, Lewis County, W. Va. regarding the location of Martin Hyre grave on Hughes Fork near Vandalia. Location is on the farm presently owned by Mrs. Nellie Smith, the second property along the blacktop road leading from Vandalia to Gerogetown. From the Skin Creek Road at Stonewall Jackson Lake, go east past the first house on the left and then the second property has two houses on the left. The grave is about 400 yards behind the two story house along the line fence on the ridge.

According to Mr. McCue the person buried here was the father of Charlie Hyre, a self educated attorney in Vandalia at the turn of the century, whose daughter was Mrs. Jonas (Murrel) West of Vandalia. A search of the 1900 census shows a Charles A. Hyre living in the Skin Creek District and having a daughter Murrel in the family. In the 1880 census we find Charles A. Hyre in grandfather Henry D. Hardman household as well as his mother Matilda J. Hyre as a widow. Checking the Lewis County marriage records we find Matilda J. Hardman married 4 Jan 1854, Martin Hyre. Therefore we now have proof Martin died prior to 1880. Mr McCue stated the grave was under a spreading chestnut tree. This compiler, Hartzel G. Strader remembbers seeing some years ago the area was covered with periwinkle, which was a custom practiced by people to plant this hardy groundcover over grave sites.
Marvin Chapel CemeteryLewisThis cemetery is located on Ward Run off US Route 19, south of the Stonewall Jackson Dam and five and seven thenth miles south of Interstate 79 Roanoke Exit 91. The Ward Run road sign is on the left and Mudlick Road on the right. Go up Ward Run about one tenth mile to the forks. The cemetery is directly ahead upon a wooded hill. To reach it, take the left hand fork about one tenth mile near a house and at this point go up the dirt road to the right another one tenth mile to where presently an oil tank is located. Turn right onto a remnant of an old road which is barely visible as a depression in the soil which can only be traveled by a four wheel drive vehicle or walking this remaining 150 yards.

Ranges Run CemeteryLewisWe shall call this Ranges RunCemetery for lack of the true name. It is located below the Big Skin Creek road, just south of Ranges Run and across Big Skin Creek from the mouth of Hog Hollow and the Round Knob in Lewis County, WV. The tributary, Ranges Run, is most likely not the probper name and should be Raines Run in honor of a Rains family that lived at the mouth, moving to Highland County, Ohio in 1835. The cemetery is now fenced by the Corp of Engineers.

Inscriptions read 05 Sep 1987 by Hartzel G. Strader and Dana Francis. The entire enclosure was probed for possible stones under the sod. Only three stones with ciphers were found. It is likely this was a family plot whose surname began with an M, although the 1850 census does not help in determining who this may be. The letters EJ may have been Elizabeth Johnson, wife of Richard, but Sam Hardman's History of Vandalia Community state they are buried about one mile downstream from Charles Run.

Reeder CemeteryLewis(Also known as Glady Fork Cemetery)

The Reeder Cemetery is located on Glady Fork of Skin Creek in Lewis Ccunty, WV. To reach it from Interstate 79, take the Skin Creek Road Exit 96 and go past the Stonewall Jackson Dam entrance and on to the Glady fork Road which is three and three tenths miles distance from I-79. Turn right and go a half mile to where a boat dock is located on the left. A chain linked fence can be seen up on the hill to the right. A little farther down the road is a driveway to the cemetery which has a locked gate at the entrance. The driveway, about 200 yards in length, is very steep and gullied, making it difficult for a four wheeled drive vechile to be used in reaching the cemetery. Therefore it is necessary to walk from the gate to the cemetery. The area is well fenced but the vegetative growth is waist high, indicating it is no longer an active burying ground. Rittenhouse-Simons-Crawford CemeteriesLewisThree Cemeteries at Emmart, by Mary Crawford Clawsey
Three small private cemeteries are located on the hillside behind the former Hannah Temple Methodist Church (more recently a recreation center)at Emmart, Collins Settlement District, in the northeast quadrant of the angle formed by County Route 44 (Walkersville-Jacksonville Road) just before it intersects with County Route 46 (Abrams Run Road). Although the roads have recently been sligtly rerouted because of the Stonewall Jackson Dam, the church site and the cemeteries have been left undisturbed.

These cemeteries are located 1.3 miles north of Walkersville, Lewis County, WV on the Orlando Road (County Route 44). A gravel etrance is on the right up the hill about 300 feet. They are in a wooded area and difficult to see from the road. Location is directly accross the highway from the entrance of the Abrams Run Rod (County Route 46). Origination was probably due to a Methodist Church at this site t one time, where now stands a youth center.

Guides to the location were Mrs. Evelyn Butcher and Guy Strader. Copied by Hartzel G. Strader 02 Sep 1990.

The following information was taken from "The Rock From Which You Were Hewn" by Donal O'Donovan: The Catholic Almanac for 1864 states that a church was erected in Murrays Settlement, unfinished, attended the 4th Sunday. It was left unfinished for about a year because many of the young men went off to fight in the Civil War. Baptisms were recorded for this church as early as 1868. Mass had been offered and baptisms performed at Murrays Settlement in the 1850's. There was an earlier church here but no deed for the property on which the church and cemetery are situated was found. On May 31, 1910 Father Quirk pruchased 1.5 acres of ground from Pat Lohan for the church.
Church records show that most of the parishioners attached to St. Bridget's came from three counties in Ireland: Roscommon, Galway and Mayo. And a great number came from one particular parish in County Roscommon, the parkish of Kilgaffin, and one parish in County Galway, the parish of Killahan. Many of these early settlers children were born in Allegany County, Maryland before coming to Lewis County. In 1877 an addition and improvements were made to the church. A 10 'x 10' sacristy was added and a vestibule. The cemetery was blessed and fenced in. The wrought iron fence was installed in 1914.
Saint Mary's CemeteryLewisTo reach this cemetery take US Routes 33/119 west from Weston, Lewis County, WV. Taking the Fink Creek Road, go about a quarter of a mile to a small driveway on the right side of the road. Go up this driveway, which runds uphill and parallel with the Fink Creek Road, for a short distance and then turns right up into the cemetery. Cemetery is in good condition and well kept. Read 1991 by Earl and Matha Byrd.

The rightful name of theis cemetery is Holy Name of Mary Cemetery but has almost always been referred to as St. Marys. In the book "The Rock From Which Your Were Hewn" by Donal O'Donovan, is a short account of this church and the people of the area: "The strictly Irish settlement on Fink Creek began about ten years after St. Clara. From the little information available, we believe the first church built at Fink was built around 1867. It was a log curch and built on the site of the present St. Mary's Cemetery. Te church was called St. Brandon (St. Brendan) and continued in use until a new church was built during the years 1886-1887and dedicated by Bishop John J. Kain in 1887. When the new church was dedeicated the name was changed to Holy Name of Mary." This church was more recently located on the Wolf Run Road which is on County Route 9 and beyond the Fink Creek Road turn off. The church was a few yards up this road on the left hand side and located on land donated to the church by members of the Flesher family. The church was discontinued about 1988 and has since been torn down.

Susan Swecker's Burying GroundLewisThe following was submitted by Ruth Post:
Susan Frances Swecker had a long widowhood and was commonly referred to as the "Widow Swecker." The Adam/Susan Swecker holdings were at the extreme end of the right fork of Canoe Run, Lewis County, WV. No one has any knowledge of this cemetery in the present day, but Mrs. Post talked with Miss Mary Conrad who lived to be 94 years of age and who had a strong, clear mind until the end and who told her of thie burial ground. She could not have been mistaken, for she (Miss Conrad) was born ca 1880 and grew up as the burials occurred there.

From the Lewis County, WV Obituary Books (1920-1929) is Susan's obituary. It reads:
Susan Frances (Craig) Swecker-Born 07 May 1840, Albemarle County, VA, died 31 Dec 1924. Age 84y 7m 24d. Married Adam Swecker 21 Feb 1861. He died more than 50 years ago. Six children: Charles Swecker, who died in infancy; Mary E. wife of W.W. Linger; Lucy wife of S.A. Armstrong; May V. wife of Charles Weaver; all are deceaed except Minnie F. wife of A. L. McCoy of Sutton and Ella M. Swecker at home. Also survived by one brother, C.T. Craig. Funeral and burial in the home cemetery.

It was common practice among the early settlers to bury on the home ground. There are many such grave sites in Lewis County that are no longer recognizable and all traces of these small family cemeteries are forever lost to us. We are grateful to Mrs. Post for the information about this one.

Vandalia CemeteryLewisVandaliaThis cemetery is located on a hill overlooking he village of Vandalia, in southern Lewis County, WV. Itis also known as the Hall Cemetery, probably because the Hall family owned the surroundingland in the early 1800s (many of whom are buried here as well as family connections such as the Forinashes). The cemetery is along the Skin Creek road in the northern part of Vandalia. Old timersstate that in the 1800s there was a church located in the front part, which was razed in the 1880s and two other churches were built nearer the center of the village. Both survived until the year 1956 when they were torn down and one brick church replaced them in the center of the village.

The inscriptions were copied by rows which give an indication of family connections. They were read by Hartzel G. Strader 28 Aug 1981 and rechecked 21 Apr 1984.

Waldeck CemeteryLewisWaldeckThis cemetery is located on US Route 33/119, in Lewis County, WV, at the Waldeck United Methodist Church. The church and cemetery are on the right side of the road. Church tradition is as follows: The first Waldeck Church was a log structure which was built in 1849. With the coming of sawmills in the county, the log church was dismantled and replaced with a frame structure. This second structure was set on fire by the indians and destroyed. It was immediately replaced by a third church. Around 1910, this church was also destroyed by a fire which was rumored to have been arson. The third church was replaced with the present building, which is still faithfully serving God and the community.

Roland Ramsay is the owner of the property surrounding the graveyard. It is located about 400yards up a very steep hil behind his house.About the only means of getting there is by walking. Ther is a legal right of way to this burial spot, that has about a two foot deep ravine and some fallen trees across it.

There appears to be only five graves, marked by sandstones. Three have hand cut ciphers and only one of these has dates.

Through intermarriage connections with the Strader family, it was immediately determined that the O.W. initials, and the general knowledge that this area was where the Warner family lived, it was determined this was Owen Warner. Some records have his given name as Oren.

The E.W. would be the wife, Elizabeth. Lewis County marriage records show Oren Warner married 08 Aug 1830 to Betsy Davis. Lewis County death records show William Davis died 19 Aug 1854, age 88, born in Rockingham County, VA, son-in-law Owen Warner reporting. The two sandstone markers with no ciphers may be William and wife. The other M.S.W. cipher marker matches the death record of Marshall S. Warner, died 07 Mar 1855, age 23, born in Braxton County, parents Owen and Eliza Warner, father reporting.
