Streams travel by Indians
Indians came to Hacker's Creek hunting ground and further into Upshur County by trails leading up the Little Kanawha River and across the divide waters of the West Fork. The principal trail in Lewis followed Leading Creek, crossed over to Polk Creek down the stream to its mouth, up Stone Coal Creek, then across Buckhannon Mountain and down Saul's Run to Buckhannon. Freemans Creek was a short cut used by Indians on their way to Hacker's Creek settlement.
