Judge Bennett Race Track
Horse Track established in Lewis County
Judge W. G. Bennett first established his race course at the Riverside Stock Farm in early 1930's.
This farm was located about 2 miles north of Weston on the Clarksburg Weston Road. Judge Bennett had a one time what was the finest collection of thoroughbred horses to be found anywhere in West Virginia. Among them were many horses valued at from $250 to $5000. "Riverside" was a popular resort for vistiors from all sections who were admirers of equine beauty.
In addition to a first-class mile track there was also a covered track of one-half mile, in which the horses were trained during the winter and in inclement weather. This covered track was continued in use by Hunter M.
Bennett, son of Judge W. C. Bennett, until it was destroyed by fire on the night of November 7, 1932, in which twelve head of horses and a lot of valuable farm machinery, feed and other property were also destroyed. Judge Bennett usually kept about forty head of fine horses in his stable at all times and "Riverside" was well known to all lovers of good horses. At one time county fairs were held at"Riverside" and the place then known as the Bennett fair grounds.
